Hawaiian Island Traditions

The Hawaiian Traditions of the Luau and the Hula are what will turn your trip to Hawaii into a cherished memory.

Dance the Hula

Sometimes known as the royal patron of the hula King David Kalakaua restored this ancient art to it's place as a national treasure. The hula is more than a dance, it is a form of storytelling used to depict the history and evolution of Hawaii. It is at the heart of Hawaiian culture having once been a ritual to an ancient Hawaiian goddess. Forced underground by well intentioned missionaries who deemed the dance paganism this lovely art form has survived to enchant an international audience who travel to Hawaii to enjoy this mystical and magical eden.

Many resorts and hotels feature the pleasure of the hula for the enjoyment of it's guests. Here is a look at some of the places travelers may experience the hula on Hawaii's Big Island.

The Fairmont Orchid on the Big Island - Features a nightly performance with two musicians and a dancer at Brown's Beach House restaurant. Hula lessons are available to guests for a fee.

Sheraton Waikiki - Entertains visitors with a nightly Sunset Hula Show at their pool. Their presentation represents the chronology of the Hula from the past to the present.

Hawaiian Luaus

The same King David Kalakaua, who gave the hula it's rebirth established the Hawaiian luau. Here people sat on mats and ate lovely Hawaiian delicacies among ferns and flowers. Still one of the major attractions in Hawaii today no one travels to Hawaii without benefiting from the experience of a luau.
