Hawaii Vacations - The Big Island

The Islands of Hawaii are actually giant underwater volcanoes, which have erupted in the Pacific Ocean to create the Hawaiian Islands. Touring the Volcanoes is still a great source of tourist activity for Hawaii today and tourism has replaced the exportation of goods such as coffee, sugar and pineapple as the main source of commercial trade in Hawaii.
The original Hawaiian people were Polynesian. There were many small kingdoms or castes among the people until 1795 when Kamehameha became King. He and his descendents reined until 1893 when Queen Liliuokalani surrendered the kingdom to the United States Under Protest. When visiting Hawaii, a major part in making the journey such a grand adventure is the culture and hospitality of the Hawaiian people. The Hula and the Luau are a part of Hawaiian culture and history and are still a major attraction for any visit to Hawaii today. Visit our Hawaiian Hotels page for accommodations on the Big Island or visit Maui Condos for lodging on the island of Maui.
"This archipelago represents the exposed peaks of a great undersea mountain range known as the Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain, formed by volcanic activity over a hotspot in the earth's mantle. At about 3,000 km (1,860 miles) from the nearest continent, the Hawaiian Island archipelago is the most isolated grouping of islands on Earth" (Macdonald, Abbott, and Peterson, 1984).
